In our fast-paced world it is easy to overlook the importance of our holistic health and for some, I think it is fair to say, are completely unaware of what it means to be holistically healthy.
Instead, many people focus on just one aspect of their health, believing that a particular health concern, be it physical or emotional, can be fixed from a singular approach. For some people this could be focusing on their physical health, believing that to start exercising more will be the answer they’re looking for but will not seek to make any changes to their nutritional intake or psychological health.
While others believe that to start a new eating program, maybe find the latest diet trend to follow, will give them the results they desire but will forego any physical activity and will not even consider that they have emotional stuff to address before any solo eating plan will work for them.
Although the importance of looking after your mental health is at last being more widely acknowledged now, it is still sadly overlooked by many people’s drive to self-improvement.
While all programs that seek to improve health and fitness are undoubtedly important, a truly comprehensive and effective approach to improving health and wellbeing and the only way that will actually bring about true and sustainable changes, will encompass not only physical activity but also mental wellbeing and nutritional intake inclusively.
In this blog, we will explore the reasons why it is important to prioritise a holistic approach to your health and fitness and how this can lead to a fitter, healthier and emotionally stronger you.
Let’s start by considering the Interconnectedness of mental, physical and nutritional health. These aspects of wellbeing are not isolated. They influence each other significantly. For instance, poor mental health can lead to unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. On the other hand, an inadequate diet can contribute to mental health issues. A perpetual loop that requires each aspect to be addressed in order for a remedy to be achieved. An holistic approach acknowledges this interplay and seeks to address all three aspects together.
It is becoming more widely acknowledged that mental health is a cornerstone of overall wellbeing. Stress, anxiety and depression are on the rise in today’s society. Identifying your own wants and desires and actively pursuing resources that support you and the activities that you enjoy can significantly improve your mental health.
Physical activity is not just about aesthetics. It’s an investment in our overall wellbeing and vitality. While sculpting a visually appealing physique may be a motivating factor, the benefits of regular exercise extend much deeper. Physical activity plays a pivotal role in enhancing cardiovascular health, strengthening the immune system and regulating various metabolic processes. Beyond the tangible health outcomes, exercise has a profound impact on mental wellbeing, reducing stress, anxiety and depression while promoting cognitive function. Moreover, it develops a sense of energy and vitality, which seems to empower people to lead more active, fulfilling lives.
Now, let’s look at nutrition! Nutritional health is often underestimated by many people and the connection between gut health and mental health is still greatly misunderstood. This is however, a critical component of your overall wellbeing, influencing not just your physical appearance but also the intricate workings of your internal systems. The food you consume serves as the building blocks for every cellular function, impacting energy levels, immune response and cognitive performance. A well-balanced diet provides essential nutrients that support your body’s growth, repair and maintenance. Proper nutrition acts as a preventive measure against chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune diseases. Additionally, it plays a pivotal role in regulating your mood and promoting emotional resilience. Recognising this strong connection between what we eat, gut health and how we feel underscores the critical importance of nutritional health in fostering an overall state of wellbeing.
So, taking these three elements of mental health, physical activity and nutritional intake into consideration, we can see that an holistic approach to your health really is the only way to achieve sustainable, life-changing results and here are some reasons why:
Your improved quality of life! When you are mentally and physically healthy and have access to nutritious food, your overall quality of life improves. You can participate more fully in activities, work and family life. This enhanced wellbeing further enhances your sense of purpose and boosts your spirit and vitality.
Reduced health scares! Preventive measures are less stressful to undertake than treating chronic illnesses, allowing you to take charge of your wellbeing before any serious health issues arise.
To demonstrate the real-world impact of an holistic approach to health and fitness, we can look at successful case studies. Several local authorities worldwide have already implemented holistic health programs with outstanding results. For example, in Okinawa, Japan, the concept of “Moai” groups promotes social and emotional support within their community, contributing to the region’s exceptional longevity rates. Similarly, the “Blue Zones” project in the United States is a community health initiative that aims to improve longevity and wellbeing by applying healthy diets, regular physical activity, strong social connections and purpose-driven lives.
The project, which began in 2009, saw results such as reductions in obesity rates, smoking prevalence and healthcare costs. The participants in these blue zones communities have reported higher levels of wellbeing and have seen increases in life expectancy.
So, in conclusion! In the pursuit of true health and fitness, it is important to embrace a holistic approach. Mental, physical and nutritional health are deeply interconnected and addressing them in tandem can bring about transformative change. The benefits of such an approach are numerous, including an improved quality of life, reduced health scares and increased mental strength, not to mention the physical aesthetics as an added benefit.
By following an holistic approach, you can become your own catalyst for positive change in your own life, creating a healthier and happier environment around you. It is time to recognise that true wellbeing goes beyond physical fitness; it involves the mind, the body and your nutrition inclusively.
